Garter stitch: how to knit it

Garter stitch is the easiest knitted fabric. Every row is knit, so there is nothing to track.

How it works

Cast on any number of stitches, then knit every row. Two rows make one ridge.

Why beginners like it

The fabric lies flat, does not curl and looks the same on both sides, which makes it good for scarves and blankets.

Tip

Count ridges rather than rows. Slip the first stitch of each row for a neater edge once you are comfortable.

Common mistakes

Accidental extra stitches often come from pulling yarn over the needle at the start of a row. Count your stitches every few rows.

Good first projects

Try a knitted scarf or a simple garter blanket.
