How to crochet an amigurumi doll

An amigurumi doll is a set of small shapes joined together. If you can work rounds, increases and decreases, you can make one. The hard part is keeping the pieces in proportion.

Start with the head

Dolls read as cute when the head is large. Our pattern maker makes the head a little over a third of the total height. Stuff it firmly and shape it with your hands as you go.

Make the body and limbs

Work the body in the dress colour so you do not need separate clothes. Stuff the arms lightly so they hang naturally, and stuff the legs firmly so the doll sits up.

Add hair

A hair cap is a shallow dome worked in the hair colour. Fit it on the head, pin it, and sew around the edge. Add long strands through the stitches for longer hair.

Finish the face

Embroider the eyes after the head is stuffed so you can see the spacing. Pin them first and move the pins until the face looks right. Embroidered eyes are safer than safety eyes on anything for a child under 3.

Join it all

Pin every piece before sewing. Sew the head on with a strong yarn, going around twice, since the neck takes the most strain.

Set the size and colours in the amigurumi doll maker.
