How to half double crochet

Half double crochet sits between single and double crochet in height. It works up quickly and makes warm fabric.

Steps

1. Wrap the yarn over the hook.
2. Insert your hook into the stitch.
3. Wrap the yarn over and pull up a loop. You have three loops on the hook.
4. Wrap the yarn over and pull through all three.

Tip

At the start of a row, chain 1 or 2 as your pattern says. UK patterns call this stitch a half treble.

Common mistakes

Working in the third loop by accident changes the look of your fabric. Check where your hook enters on each row.

When to use it

It suits beanies, scarves and warm blankets.
