How to make a magic ring in crochet

A magic ring starts a round piece with no hole in the centre.

Steps

  1. Make a loop with the yarn tail hanging down and the working yarn behind it.
  2. Put your hook through the loop and pull up the working yarn.
  3. Chain 1 to secure it. This chain does not count as a stitch.
  4. Work your stitches into the loop, over both strands.
  5. Pull the tail firmly and the ring closes.

Tip

Weave the tail in firmly, or the centre can open again with use. Pull gently at first so the tail slides.

Common mistakes

A ring that will not close usually means a stitch went around only one strand. Work over both strands.

When to use it

Use it for amigurumi heads, bodies and any shape that starts at a point. Try it on a mini chick keychain.
