Hook & Seam

How to single crochet for beginners

Single crochet is a short, firm stitch and the main stitch of amigurumi. UK patterns call it double crochet.

Steps

  1. Insert your hook into the stitch.
  2. Wrap the yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have two loops on the hook.
  3. Wrap the yarn over again.
  4. Pull through both loops.

Tip

For toys, keep the fabric tight so that stuffing does not show. In rows, work a chain 1 before you turn.

Common mistakes

Missing the last stitch of a row makes your work narrower. Count stitches at the end of each row until the rhythm feels easy.

When to use it

It suits amigurumi, cloths and any firm, dense fabric.
