The chain is a line of loops and the start of most crochet.
Steps
- Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
- Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.
- Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook. That is one chain.
- Repeat until you have the number you need.
Tip
Keep chains loose, since a tight foundation chain pulls the edge of your work in. Count the V shapes on the front, and do not count the loop on your hook.
Common mistakes
Counting the slip knot or the loop on the hook gives a wrong total. Count only the finished chains.
When to use it
Chains start flat pieces, turn rows and make the spaces in stitches such as moss stitch.
