A picture becomes a crochet chart when each small area turns into one coloured cell. Simple images give the best results.
Choose the right picture
Pick a clear shape on a plain background. Logos you own, pet silhouettes, simple drawings and pixel art all work well. Busy photos lose detail when they are reduced to a few colours. Use only pictures you own or have permission to use.
Limit the colours
Start with 4 to 6 colours. Each extra colour adds yarn changes and carried strands. Check that your chosen colours exist in the yarn you plan to buy.
Set the size
More cells mean more detail and a much longer project. A 50-cell-wide chart is a good first try. Doubling the width gives about four times the stitches.
Pick a stitch
- Single crochet: small cells that show detail well, but the fabric is dense.
- Corner to corner: square blocks that grow quickly, good for blankets.
Clean up the chart
Lone stitches are slow to work and rarely improve a picture. Our tool can remove them for you.
