How to bind off in knitting

Binding off in knitting finishes the edge so your stitches cannot unravel. UK patterns call it casting off.

Steps

  1. Knit two stitches.
  2. Lift the first stitch over the second and off the needle.
  3. Knit one more stitch and lift the previous stitch over it.
  4. Repeat until one stitch remains.
  5. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the last loop.

Tip

Keep this edge loose so that it stretches like the rest of your work. In ribbing, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches as you bind off.

Common mistakes

A tight edge is the most common problem. If yours pulls in, use a needle one size larger for the bind-off row.

When to use it

Use this method at the end of scarves, blankets and the top of flat pieces.
