Rib stitch stacks columns of knit and purl stitches. The fabric stretches, which suits cuffs, hat brims and scarves.
Two purl, one knit
Cast on a multiple of 3 stitches, plus 1.
- Row 1: Knit 1, then repeat purl 2, knit 1 to the end.
- Row 2: Purl 1, then repeat knit 2, purl 1 to the end.
Repeat these two rows.
Tip
Bring the yarn forward before a purl stitch and back before a knit stitch. A stray loop over the needle usually means the yarn was on the wrong side.
Common mistakes
A column that shifts usually means you lost your place in the repeat. Knit stitches show as Vs and purls as bumps, so read your work before the next row.
Try it
Set a size for a ribbed scarf in the knitted scarf maker.
