How to crochet a granny square

A granny square is a small square worked outward from the centre. It uses only chains, slip stitches and double crochets, so it is one of the best first projects. These steps use US terms.

Round 1

Make a magic ring. Chain 3, which counts as your first double crochet, then work 2 double crochets into the ring. Chain 2. Work 3 double crochets and chain 2, three more times. Join to the top of the first chain 3 with a slip stitch, then pull the ring closed. You now have 12 double crochets and 4 corner spaces.

Round 2

Join a new colour in any corner space. Work chain 3, 2 double crochets, chain 2 and 3 double crochets all in that corner. Chain 1. In each remaining corner, work 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets, then chain 1. Join with a slip stitch. This round has 24 double crochets.

Round 3 and beyond

Repeat round 2, and add 3 double crochets with a chain 1 in each chain-1 space along the sides. Each round adds 12 double crochets, so round 3 has 36.

If your square will not lie flat

Wavy edges usually mean too many chains between clusters. Curling corners usually mean the corner chain is too tight. Count the stitches in each round and press the square gently before joining.
