You will need

  • Worsted (4) yarn in the colours listed
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook, or the size that matches your swatch
  • Polyester fibre stuffing, yarn needle, stitch marker
  • Colour C yarn for the eyes and nose
  • Colour B yarn for the scarf
  • Pins, to try out where things go
  • A: White
  • B: Red
  • C: Dark grey

Before you start

  • Size depends on how tight you crochet. Fewer stitches per 10 cm makes a larger toy.
  • Make a small test piece first. If it comes out larger than the gauge, try a smaller hook. If it comes out smaller, try a larger hook.
  • A number in brackets at the end of a line, such as (24), is how many stitches you should have. Count them before moving on.
  • Made a mistake? Pull the yarn gently to undo the stitches back to the mistake, then carry on from there.
  • Toys are worked in a spiral, so rounds are not joined. Put a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round. When you come back to the marked stitch, the round is done: take the marker out, work that stitch, and put the marker in the stitch you just made. That is the first stitch of the new round.
  • Keep your stitches tight so the stuffing does not show. A smaller hook than the yarn label suggests helps with this.
  • Add stuffing a little at a time, and shape it with your fingers before closing a part.

Lower ball

Colour A (White). Work in a spiral. After the last round, cut the yarn leaving about 20 cm and thread it on a yarn needle. Take the needle through the front loop of each of the 6 remaining stitches, always from the hole outwards. Then pull the yarn to close the hole.

Beanie

Colour C (Dark grey). Work in a spiral. When finished, cut the yarn and leave a long tail. You will use it to sew this part on.

This is a small beanie that sits on the head, not a brimmed hat. Keep the open edge round and do not stuff it.

Assembly

1.Stuff both balls firmly and close them. The closed end of the head goes at the bottom, and the closed end of the lower ball goes at the top, so these two ends will meet at the neck.
2.Join the head: put the head on the lower ball with the two closed ends together and pin it. Cut about 56 cm of Colour A. Sew around the neck, taking a small stitch through round 29 of the lower ball, then a small stitch through round 19 of the head, and so on. These rounds have about 18 stitches. Go around twice and pull the yarn firmly, so the head does not wobble.
3.Fit the beanie on the head so its edge sits on round 7, and pin it evenly. Using the long tail, sew around the edge, taking one stitch through the beanie and one through the head.
4.Eyes: on round 11 of the head, below the beanie, mark two places with 5 stitches between them. In Colour C, make a small oval about 1 stitch wide and 2 rounds tall, going through the same two points 6 to 8 times.
5.Nose: in the middle of the eyes, on round 12, make a small triangle in Colour C with its point down. Make the top edge about 3 stitches wide, then bring a few stitches from that edge down to one point, about 2 rounds lower.
6.Scarf: in Colour B, crochet a chain about 30 cm long (about 63 chain stitches). Fasten off. Tie it around the neck in a knot or bow at the front. Add one or two small stitches at the back so it does not slide.
7.Take all the yarn ends into the body and cut them close to the surface.

These places are only a suggestion. For a carrot nose, use orange yarn and make the point longer. You can also move the eyes, tilt the beanie, or tie the scarf at the side. Pin everything in place first, look at it, then sew.

Closing the hole, seen from above. Start at 1 and take the needle through each front loop, from the hole outwards. After 6, pull the yarn and the hole draws shut.
